I know it can be hard to find something new to watch on Netflix, so here are some movies and tv shows that are currently on my watchlist.
The I-Land (Released 2019)
Genre: Sci-Fi/Thriller
The show is about ten strangers who wake up on an unfamiliar island together with no memory. As they continue to be on the island, the group quickly learns that the world is not what it seems. Despite the bad reviews online, I enjoyed watching the show and loved the big twist in the series. If you're interested in watching the I-Land, make sure you pay attention to every detail and watch it the whole series.
Astronomy Club The Sketch Show (Released 2019)
Genre: Comedy
Astronomy Club is a black comedy sketch show where 8 performers use comedy to discuss pop culture, social issues, and real-word topics. The sketches are very creative and show everyone's unique style equally. I like how all the different personalities that are on the show work really well together. And they way If you love sketch shows like Key & Peele or Dave Chappelle Show, you should definitely watch this series.
Point Blank (Released 2019)
Genre: Action/Crime
Point Blank is about an ER nurse and a criminal who is forced to work together to take down a group of corrupt cops. Both of their lives and families are threatened which leads them no choice but to fight back. This movie has good action scenes and many funny moments. Surprisingly these two actors work really well together and I wouldn't mind seeing them in another movie.
YOU (Show Released 2018)
Genre: Thriller/Drama
If you haven't already, you need to watch this series on Netflix. The show YOU is about an obsessive man who goes to extreme measures to be in women's lives. He's dangerously charming and will do some crazy things "out of love". This series will keep you on your toes and is not your typical psychothriller. Season two recently came out and the series did not disappoint. I pretty much binged watched every season in a few days.
Fractured (Released 2019)
Genre: Mystery/Thriller
The movie begins with parents rushing their six-year-old daughter to the hospital after her arm is fractured at a gas station. Once they arrive at the hospital, the father notices strange things happening at the hospital. After waiting in the lounge, the husband realizes his wife and daughter disappeared from the ER. The father starts searching for them and is convinced the hospital is hiding something. Usually, I can figure out the big twist in movies, but this movie made second myself a few times. I loved how the movie kept me interested and didn't show the truth until the very end of the movie.
The Witcher (Released 2019)
Genre: Fantasy/Drama
The Witcher is based on both the book series and the video games. The series is about three main characters: the sorceress Yennefer, the witcher Geralt, and the princess of Cirilla. Yennefer has magical powers and gets recruited by Tissasia to study magic at Aretuza. Geralt is a mutated monster hunter who struggles to find his place in a world where people are more wicked than beasts. Cirilla is the granddaughter of Queen Calanthe and is destined to meet Geralt of Rivia (The Witcher). The princess has magical powers but is unaware of her magic abilities. This show is better than I expected and it gets better once you know how all three characters connect. You should watch this show if you're into Game of Thrones or fantasy dramas.
Time Trap (Released 2018)
Genre: Sci-Fi/Fantasy
Time Trap is about Hopper an archeology professor who goes missing while exploring a hidden cave system. Hopper's graduate students, Jackie and Taylor, start to worry about him when he doesn’t return days later. The students go to the caves with their friend Cara to try to find him. While they search for their professor, the students discover a cave where time moves differently than it does on the surface. There a few corny moments, but it is still a decent movie with an interesting ending.
Wu Assassins (Released 2019)
Genre: Action/Martial Arts/Fantasy
The series is about a chef in San Francisco named Kai who becomes the last of the Wu Assassins. After he defends his friend, the chef gets a vision of a mysterious woman. She gives him the power of a thousand monks and tells him about the five corrupt warlords in the city. Kai is chosen to keep the mystical powers out of the wrong hands and defend Chinatown. I was a little hesitant at first, but the show is better than I thought it would be. I believe the first season is more of an introduction to the world of Wu Assassins and they will probably have even more action in the next season.
Raising Dion (Released 2019)
Genre: Sci-Fi/Fantasy/Drama
This series is about a woman named Nicole who raises her son Dion after the death of her husband Mark (Michael B. Jordan). With the help of Mark's best friend Pat, Nicole soon has to figure out the origin of Dion's superpowers and protect her son's secret from the world. There are corny moments but after you watch the first two episodes, the show will have you hooked! I suggest paying attention to the little details throughout the show because it will all connect at the end. Also, they recently renewed the series for a second season and I'm so excited! The show will start production this year and there will be eight one-hour episodes.
Styling Hollywood (Released 2019)
Genre: Fashion/Reality
Styling Hollywood follows the life of the couple Jason Bolden and Adair Curtis who owns JSN Studio. Jason is an amazing celebrity stylist who dresses high-profile clients for award shows and ceremonies. Adair is an innovative interior designer who renovates large homes for A-list clients. The series touches on issues within the black community and how it is being black in the fashion industry. Styling Hollywood shows viewers what it's like to be a celebrity stylist and what happens behind the scenes. If you're into fashion, styling, and good vibes, you should watch this show!
Next In Fashion (Released 2020)
Genre: Fashion/Reality
Next In Fashion is a fashion design competition series hosted by designers Alexa Chung and Queer Eye's Tan France. Eighteen designers compete in different runway challenges for a chance to win $250,000 and sell their collection on Net-a-Porter's website. I'm currently watching the show and I love it so far. I admire how the contestants are from all over the world and have worked for major fashion houses. If you love the show Project Runway, I recommend you watch this series.
