Happy Juneteenth Everybody!!
If you are not familiar with Juneteenth, the holiday celebrates the end of slavery in the United States. People also call it Independence Day, Emancipation Day, and Black Independence Day. On June 19, 1865, General Gordon Granger and other Union soldiers arrived in Galveston, Texas. These troops announced the end of slavery and the end of the civil war. Even though Abraham Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation was approved about 2 1/2 years earlier on January 1, 1863, many slave owners continued to hold their slaves captive. As a result, Juneteenth is a symbolic day that represents African American freedom. Earlier this week, the U.S. government recognized Juneteenth as a federal holiday.
Many African Americans use this day to celebrate and embrace their heritage. This year I want to celebrate Juneteenth by showcasing and supporting black-owned businesses. So here are some dope small businesses that you guys should check out!
